MoviePass, the monthly subscription based movie-going plan that allows customers to view as many films in the theaters as they please, has a long-time competitor built upon a similar, albeit intriguingly sweeter, business platform.
Sinemia, which launched and has been active in Europe for the past four-years, just recently introduced a new slate of monthly movie subscription plans in the U.S. with enticing benefits, according to TechCrunch.
Whereas MoviePass allows subscribers to view up to one theatrical film per day in any given 30-day period for just $10 per month, Sinemia launched a tiered plan built around the following options:
- $4.99 per month for one ticket
- $6.99 per month for two tickets
- $9.99 per month for two tickets (including 3D, 4D and IMAX)
- $14.99 per month for three tickets (including 3D, 4D and IMAX)
- The firm also offers plans for couples, dubbed ‘Sinemia For Two’, at slightly discounted prices for the more you buy.
Breaking Down the Value
At first glance, it may appear as if Sinemia isn’t offering as good a value for its customers as MoviePass. What’s the point of paying to see movies ‘a la cart’ for $5 apiece, when you can essentially get an unlimited number of movie tickets for just $10 per month, right?
Well, Sinemia’s CEO, Rifat Oguz, sees things a bit differently, as TechCrunch points out.
“Not everyone really needs an unlimited movie-going experience,” Oguz explained, noting that “The average [moviegoer] in the U.S. [views] four movies per year.”
Indeed, even if you only plan on getting to the theaters and watching one film per month, Sinemia provides an outstanding 50% savings in comparison to MoviePass.
Couple that with Sinemia’s added features including advanced online ticketing – as opposed to MoviePass’ requirement of having to be physically present at the theater when you buy tickets – along with the firm’s add-on options allowing you to purchase tickets to 3D/4D and IMAX productions (where available) at a slight premium – and it’s clear that Sinemia may represent a more appealing option for the casual moviegoer.
How Does It Work?
Though Sinemia, like MoviePass, still has to pay theaters for the full price of each ticket, the company is able to turn a profit by allowing movie studios and restaurants to advertise within its mobile app.
The firm recently expanded from Europe to the U.S., but, within with next 12-months, Oguz said he hopes to even further expand Sinemia’s availability to Asia.
